Vitamin D deficiency and Eczema
There is a direct link between eczema and vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D has a significant role in the immune system and the function of the skin. Eczema is characterised by an overactive immune system caused by allergens or irritants that causes the skin to become red, itchy and inflamed skin.
Vitamin D is involved in regulating the innate and adaptive immune system and inhibits the proliferation of the inflammatory cells (T cells and Th17 cells). Studies show that vitamin D induces the expression of antimicrobial peptides that results in an inhibiting antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus which is a common bacteria detected in eczema.
Vitamin D is known to modulate the increase in skin cells and maintain the skin barrier function to prevent moisture loss and protect the skin from irritants and allergens. Impaired skin barrier function is a common feature of eczema, and vitamin D deficiency may exacerbate the issue.
Did you know, 1 in 4 Australian adults are vitamin D and world wide vitamin D levels are commonly below recommendations? It could be important to know where you vitamin D levels are if you suffer with eczema.
