Post Pill Acne
The oral contraceptive pill (OCP) is often prescribed to decrease the flare-ups of acne. It is designed to reduce androgens (male hormones) which then inhibits the production of sebum to the level of a child. This is an abnormal situation as adults are supposed to have more sebum than children. A healthy amount of sebum production is important for the skin microbiome and helps lock in moisture and prevent desiccation of the skin. When coming off the pill it can be common to have a surge in androgens which can cause acne to return worse than before. And it usually gets worse around 3-6 months off the pill.
The OCP depletes the body from the following nutrients: magnesium, selenium, zinc and B vitamins. (these nutrients are required for natural skin health + so much more).
Here are three post pill acne nutrients:
Zinc: is an anti-androgen which decreases the production of testosterone and sebum secretion. Zinc has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects on C. acnes.
Vitamin A: reduces sebum production, helps to regulate collagen synthesis and repairs connective tissue in the skin.
Vitamin B5: regulates sebum production and facilitate wound healing.
It is always best to work with a health practitioner. Avoid self prescribing.
