Eczema and “leaky gut”

The concept of "leaky gut" refers to increased intestinal permeability, where the lining of the intestines develops gaps, allowing substances such as toxins, microbes, and undigested food particles to pass through the intestinal barrier and enter the bloodstream.

Here's how leaky gut might be related to eczema:

  1. Immune System Activation: When the intestinal barrier is compromised, it can lead to the leakage of harmful substances into the bloodstream. This can trigger an immune response, causing inflammation throughout the body, including the skin. In individuals predisposed to eczema, this systemic inflammation may exacerbate skin inflammation and contribute to flare-ups.

  2. Altered Gut Microbiota: The gut microbiota play a crucial role in maintaining intestinal barrier integrity and regulating immune function. Disruptions in the gut microbiota composition, often associated with conditions such as leaky gut, may lead to dysregulated immune responses and inflammation, potentially impacting skin health and exacerbating eczema symptoms.

  3. Food Sensitivities and Allergies: Leaky gut can allow larger food particles to enter the bloodstream, and can trigger immune reactions and food sensitivities. Some individuals with eczema may have underlying food allergies or sensitivities that contribute to their symptoms. Addressing leaky gut and reducing exposure to trigger foods may help alleviate eczema symptoms in these individuals.

  4. Stress and Lifestyle Factors: Chronic stress can cause leaky gut due to the gut-brain connection. When there is elevated cortisol (stress hormone) levels it can alter the gut due to the drive in inflammation. Furthermore, most of serotonin (feel good hormone) is made within our gut. So when there is a disruption in our nervous system - this directly affects our gut.

Please note: It is always best to work with a qualified practitioner.
